I completed this project as a self-directed study during the first semester of my
certification year. Through my "Reading in the Secondary School" and my work at
Dakota Collegiate, I came to understand that teachers must differentiate their instruction
in order to cause all their students to learn in the best way for each individual. This
project also focuses on the use of reading and writing skills across the curriculum which
incorporates a new wave of learning strategies. Find below a very brief synopsis of the
learning strategies with a link (click on the icon) to a longer analysis of the strategy
in Microsoft Word 97 format.
Introduction
This provides a more in-depth introduction and rational for the use of differentiated
learning strategies in the classroom.
Reading in the Secondary School Reflection
This is the final reflection from my reading across the curriculum course. It provides
concrete example of how the learning strategies can be used with theoretical support.
Word Cycle
A great activity to review vocabulary or concepts.
Three-Point Approach
A great activity to summarize notes and uses multiple intelligences.
Job Interview
A strategy that I created to help re-view concepts.
Admit & Exit Slips
A great assessment tool for the teacher in gauging student understanding and learning.
IDEAL Problem Solving Frame
A great structure to use for solving problems (especially word problems) in
mathematics.
Picture Book Journals
A great change for mathematics students. The reading gives students an entertaining
activity to engage in mentally and provides an alternate view of mathematics.
Bank Project
A project, rather than a strategy, that provides students with an activity to gather
information, present their information in a chart, and engage in writing.
Newspaper Math
A great activity to help students understand that math is used in everyday life.
LAPS Form
A great structure for listening to guest speakers or watching films.
